International Kite Festival, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

During my  trip to India I came across a sight that I never knew existed. On turning a corner on a walking tour of the old city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, I saw a group of men colouring white thread with a pink substance. The guide said it was the preparation of kite strings or manja for the annual kite festival. The pink mixture is pigment in a rice paste with ground glass. The men had tape around the fingers to stop the glass cutting the skin. The festival is being held on 14th January 2013, the day of Uttarayan. The kites or patang are flown from the roof tops. The idea of the glass is to cut the strings of other kites. I would love to witness this spectacle.
