Elusive Identities
This tapestry was inspired by a print from an advertisement for cosmetics. The image is diffused; the identity of the woman is elusive. The clue maybe the apple, what does it mean? Could she be any woman or someone specific?
I use blends of many different reds in my work. They are warm, vibrant, and give a sense of vitality.
The work was made using a cartoon to guide the formation of the shapes. Hatching aids the blending of colour.
I wanted to emulate old tapestries which were mended and altered over time by adding selvedge and border sections with visible stitches. Tapestries were a display of the wealth of a person, often their most valuable possession; reflecting their identity.
